Digital derivatives: variations on a theme...
At the turn of the 20th century photography sought to imitate art. At the turn of the 21st century a new vista opened up, whereby digital photography could be used create an aesthetic art form. I discovered this potential by chance as I was trying to obtain a good representative photograph of a painting. I soon realised that by some manipulations derivative aesthetic images could be achieved that are interesting, and even striking, in their own right.
Below you have examples of this. I've put the original painting first, and then the derivatives...

The picture "The asylum" sets out to capture the atmosphere of cold, desolate space that is both the mind of a lost soul and the bleak, cold place that is the abandoned asylum.
